A group of talented young musicians and singers stole the show at a conference for older people.

Among them were vocalist and guitarist Kayleigh Bonner and guitarist Harry Adams, both 15, who were given a standing ovation at the Older Persons’ conference organised by housing association Cartrefi Conwy.

The duo from Ysgol John Bright in Llandudno were joined at the event at Venue Cymru by cellist, Callum Thomas, 12, and his brother Ellis, a 14 year old violinist, who performed Mozart’s Romance, before Katie Heywood, 13, sang Whistle a Happy Tune from the King and I.

Kayleigh, who is the Goddaughter of Cartrefi Conwy’s Older Person Engagement Co-ordinator, Nerys Veldhuizen, who organised the event, said: “I was really nervous but enjoyed it.

“It’s the first time Harry and I have played together and I’ve never sang before to such a big audience before.”

Katie Heywood added: “I have sung with my drama group before but this is by far the biggest audience I have ever sung for. I really enjoyed it and everyone seemed to be having a lovely time.”

The entertainment also included performances by Cor Meibion Maelgwyn and the Rwsters, a choir made up of Cartrefi Conwy’s older tenants from Llanrwst.

Another visitor who received a great deal of attention was three-year-old Newfoundland dog, Midget Gem.

Handler Chris Hughes, from Pets as Therapy in Conwy, introduced tenants to the pleasure to be had from contact with friendly pets, particularly dogs.

Chris said: “This is actually the first time Midget Gem has been to an event like this but he takes it all in his stride. He likes the fuss to be honest and enjoys being stroked and all the attention.

Registered blind and deaf tenant, Gwilym Jones, 70, from Cerrigydrudion, and his wife Jane, 61, certainly enjoyed meeting Midget Gem.

Gwilym said: “I’m a former guide dog owner and user. Sadly because of mobility problems with my knees I had to give up having a guide dog which was devastating at the time.

“I do have a rescued Jack Russell for company but it was lovely meeting Midget Gem, What a gorgeous, soft and friendly dog.”
