Top builder Anwyl Construction is in line for a major building industry award for a combined £5 million office development – including their own £2 million new headquarters.

Their new home, Anwyl House on St David’s Park, Ewloe, and their neighbouring development, the £3 million Ty Draig office which now houses the Northern division of leading Welsh Social Housing provider Wales & West Housing, have been named Flintshire’s Best New Large Commercial Development.

The accolade comes from a team of experts, the Local Authority Building Control Officers who inspect new building projects.

This success is one of four nominations which means the company is once again one of the most prominent names in the North Wales Building Excellence Awards, organised by the Local Authority Building Control departments of the six county councils across the region.

Anwyl’s own building was completed two months ahead of schedule early last year and now houses 70 Anwyl Group staff, most of whom transferred from their previous home in Rhyl where the company was founded in 1930.

They followed that by completing Wales & West’s new North Wales HQ in the in time for the housing giant’s staff to move in last autumn.

Anwyl Construction Director Tom Anwyl said: “It was the end of an era to leave Rhyl but we needed larger premises and somewhere close to the A55 to suit our major expansion plans.

“Those plans are already well advanced with our Homes Division growing having plans to build over 1000 houses over the next three years including major sites in Sandbach, Willaston, Congleton, Newton le Willows, Audlem and Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, two major apartment developments in Liverpool, a busy programme of over £40 million in contracts for our Construction Division and the newly launched development arm, Anwyl Land.

“We have a solid reputation for high quality and thoughtful building in North Wales and that is shown by the success we enjoy at awards like this.

“It has always been our policy to work closely with Local Authority Building Control departments.

“We consider them a hugely important accolade and a benchmark for the construction industry in North Wales.

“It’s always nice to have your work recognised by the people whose job it is to oversee all the building work that goes on across North Wales.

“We have also enjoyed a key partnership with Wales & West Housing over a number of years which has been very important to us and to the construction industry in North Wales.”

The properties have sophisticated energy efficient features including photo-voltaic energy generating panels, sensory lighting, ground source heating and even electric vehicle charging points at Ty Draig.

Anne Hinchey, Chief Executive of Wales & West Housing, said: “We’re delighted that our Northern office has been shortlisted along with Anwyls for these awards.

“With an expanding workforce who are delivering more affordable housing across Wales, we needed to move to larger premises.

“We ensured that we used local suppliers and materials for the office, creating employment and training opportunities and boosting the local economy.”

Anwyl House was nominated by Flintshire Council Building Control Officer, Joe Williams, who said: “The Anwyl Group has built up an excellent understanding with Building Control over a number of years and consistently delivers high quality work in all aspects of the build programme.

“They have been keen throughout this project to liaise with Building Control to ensure full compliance without the need to rectify matters later.

“This ensured a very smooth construction phase as no significant problems arose. It also enabled a fast and smooth completion of the projects with no difficulties.”

Tom Anwyl added: “We are committed to ensuring that the areas in which we work benefit from the investment in them by ensuring that wherever possible we use local sub-contractors and source our materials through local supply chains and this is a policy we will continue across North Wales and the North West of England.
